SÉRIE 03, Colonnes (Cloaca Maxima)

" LES UNITÉS - L'EMPAN, LA PAUME & LE POUCE - Les contenants"is the first object that echoes the film "Les Units I - The hand", produced during a residency at the Cité internationale des arts de Paris. Clay is one of the first natural elements that man manipulated for his daily needs, he made containers for storage, trade, transport, worship and ornament. These "first" objects that archeology places at the heart of our behavioral culture, already established a link between pure utility and an ornamental tool of worship.

It is in the clay that the first traces of writing were found, this material seems to have the capacity to print the expression of a civilization and its technical evolution. It is a reference material, still used by our contemporaries, which triggered a series of technical innovations throughout human history. Seeking to expose this heritage potential, the production of "Les containers" uses different techniques specific to this material. Via craftsmanship with modeling and slip then via 3D printing which constitute three key points in the technical history of this natural material.A combination of invoices printed in the material and historically referenced.

The pieces offered have no predefined function, they are containers that can accommodate different uses only related to their proportions. They are sized to hand measurements, a multiple of an inch high, one palm in diameter, and a second diameter of a span. A series of handles in beech torillons and technical parts printed in 3d accompany the containers that have remained raw in order to suggest functions. The utility is plugged into an adaptable basic form which, once extended by a handle, becomes a vase, pot, box, urn, decoration or empty pocket, basket or container. A form that contains. It is the gesture and the type of use that the user will make of it that will define the function, it will never be fixed and will always depend on what is placed in it. Plants, ornaments or consumables, pens or other everyday objects will demonstrate the "functional".These containers are opened at the reception and question this "useful", it is therefore up to the user to define their status.

This material is also of interest linked to research into saving materials. Before firing, which will fix a final shape, it can be reused, recycled endlessly. A first draft cast in slip can be dissolved again to become raw material again allowing a new casting. An object emerges then melts to bring out another, a cycle linked to the mystical gesture of the potter making an urn or a bowl.
