« LES UNITÉS 1 - LA MAIN (séquences 1&2) »

first part of the series of films studies "Les Unités ..." which constitute a directory-source filmed preparatory research and observations of the global project "Les Unités ". These films seek to study the dynamics between landscape (given situation) and stakeholders. They install scenes that invite behaviors, creations of forms and dynamics in constrained contexts. Constrained by the space and point of view of the camera first, then by the suggested area of intervention to the participants.

Each film, scene proposed for the intervention, relates to a unit of measure present on the cane of the builders used during antiquity to allow different ethnicities with different cultures and languages to work together to build monuments. Here one measures with the body and collectively, with his foot, his elbow or his thumb ... It is this collective impulse which becomes the subject of these observations, how to act together on the same work despite our cultures or different origins? The objective of these films is to accompany the plastic research around the project-objects by recording the behaviors of the invited participants, in order to establish a directory of intuitive gestures. They do not seek to expose the creation of a form, even if it takes an important place on the screen, but what motivates gestures and attitudes, whether solo or collective. With each film its point of observation, so the different units of measure such as the palm (which becomes here hand), the thumb, the foot and the cubit ... will be staged in different contexts. A table filmed from above for the hand, a scene partially masked filmed from the ground for the foot, a sports field filmed in motion for the cubit ... The camera always takes a particular position, the frame tries to isolate the area of action to study by imposing its presence to the participants, the eye of the camera is considered as one of the protagonists, already it interacts with the participants.

For this film that observes more specifically the hands, the proposed scene is a large table, filmed from the top in full frame. Its format requires speakers to get up to reach each other and what is in front of them, but without ever returning completely in the field of the camera. The awareness of a goal above their head will cause them to consider the edge of the table as a limit they will not cross, they take into account the frame and the out of scope. No rules are imposed on them, however. This off-field is particularly revealed by the sound that accompanies the gestures, by a hand or material that arise from outside the frame, without being able to see any face. the bodies are de-personified, they are hands, working.

Two sequences, a first in the style of making of, exposes a moment of "assistant", one seeks to define a framing. The voices tell us that two people collaborate to annoy the edge of the image. The first gives the instructions, the second test the edges. Except for a few fingers appearing, coming out or going along the edges, nothing moves, all the intention is out of the field. It is an act of collaboration between two people, a common goal. The second sequence is more direct, a little less than twenty minutes of exchanges between several participants facing earth, cords ... While one plays with the eye of the camera, the other grabs, manufactures and accumulates until the first joins him in his gestures. There is here an intuitive jubilation to manipulate which will produce a typology of contexts favoring the exchange.

Each film is prepared in parallel with the design of the objects. these objects are the result of a round-trip between the preparation of a film, the elaboration of possible formal scenarios proposed to the participants and the findings after shooting. They will all be united under the question of units, so the palm goes alongside the foot, the cubit and the thumb ... and they will be presented accompanying the objects resulting from the studies. It is indeed a research at the same time Ethnographic, Anthropological and Aesthetic of the Design.
